Major Wire Industries Forms A Global Screening Alliance With Haver & Boecker

We are proud to announce that we have reached an agreement with Germany-based Haver & Boecker, owner of W.S. Tyler Canada Ltd. located in St. Catharines, Ontario, to establish a global screening alliance starting on January 1, 2012. Bringing together our collective experience of more than 250 years in screening and a broad product line involving screen media, vibrating screens, washing and pelletizing equipment, the alliance seeks to expand our growth opportunities while further strengthening our current capabilities with customers throughout the North American and global aggregate, mining and mineral markets.

The way our customers currently do business with both companies has not changed. Major Wire and W.S. Tyler dealers and representatives will continue serving our respective customers and prospects as we do today. Fortunately, there is very minimal overlap of independent dealers and representatives within North America and globally. As part of the alliance, W.S. Tyler management has asked Major Wire to manage its Salisbury, North Carolina, facility with the intent to serve Major Wire’s extensive dealer network throughout the U.S. and in Latin America. All remaining operations for both companies will continue to operate independently.

“A few years ago I began developing a succession plan that would ensure that Major Wire would continue to expand and provide long-term opportunity for our employees and loyal customer base after I retire,” explained Jean Leblond, president and owner of Major Wire Industries. He added that he has found a partner that shares the same values, desire to invest in the future and focuses on the customer first.

Representing its parent company Haver & Boecker, Canadian subsidiary W.S. Tyler will initially acquire a 40% share of Major Wire Industries on January 1, 2012, and purchase the remaining 60% in 2016.

“Our alliance with Major Wire will prove to be a unique opportunity for two family-owned manufacturers to effectively employ their combined strengths and expertise to the benefit of the North American and global mining, mineral and aggregate markets,” commented Walter Haver, joint owner of Haver & Boecker. “It is clearly a win-win for all personnel, sales channels, vendors and most of all, the customers we serve.”

Flex-Mat Vibrating Wire Technology Turns 15!

Flex-Mat® independently vibrating wire technology has been revolutionizing the screening industry for 15 years. Since its introduction in 1996, Flex-Mat technology, now in its third generation with Flex-Mat 3 Tensioned and Modular versions, has been providing solutions to common screening challenges and a way to increase product value and return on investment.

Previously, self-cleaning screen media was mostly available through European manufacturers, resulting in long lead times and high costs for North American screening operations. To solve this problem, Jean Leblond, President and Owner of Major Wire, began locally manufacturing tensioned self-cleaning screen media that does not have cross wires and lasts up to three times longer than traditional woven wire.

Unique in design, Flex-Mat technology is made of crimped wires assembled side-by-side and held together by distinctive lime-green polyurethane strips. Because each wire vibrates independently, it increases material screening action and in-spec material throughput, virtually eliminates blinding, pegging and clogging and reduces downtime spent cleaning or replacing screen media.

Initially available in Series D and T tensioned panels, Major Wire began offering Flex-Mat Technology in Series S in 1999 and Series LFM in 2001. By 2005, Major Wire had advanced Flex-Mat technology to it’s third generation, Flex-Mat 3. Continuing to revolutionize the screening industry, Major Wire introduced Flex-Mat 1-foot x 1-foot (305 mm x 305 mm) panels for modular screen decks in 2007 and 1-foot x 2-foot (305 mm x 610 mm) modular panels in 2011.

Since 1996, Major Wire has been able to manufacture Flex-Mat self-cleaning screen media cost effectively with competitive lead times for screening operations throughout the globe. To date, it has been proven in more than 20,000 aggregate, mining and recycle applications worldwide.

Major Wire Expands Screening Expertise

Names Nepean Rubber & Plastics New Australian Authorized Dealer

As a leading manufacturer and—most importantly—global provider of screening solutions, we are constantly looking to build customer relationships throughout the world to expand our expertise and solve your toughest screening challenges. We recently did just that, teaming with our new Authorized Dealer Nepean Rubber & Plastics. In addition to providing screen media solutions currently not available in Australia, Major Wire looks forward to working with Nepean’s quarrying and mining customers to increase their production and overall screening efficiency.

Nepean opened its doors in 1982 and specializes in the quarrying and mining industries, manufacturing everything from rubber linings to conveyor components to screen media. Its screening specialists include David Hewitson, a 25-year industry veteran that has solved screening challenges throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

“You don’t need to be an engineer to look at the local product side by side to see that the Flex-Mat® 3 is put together a whole lot better,” said Hewitson. “Flex-Mat 3 lasts two to three times longer than normal woven mesh. Bringing this product to the Australian market allows all mines and quarries to extend the wear life on all decks just through the availability of the smaller and larger aperture sizes.”

Given Nepean’s strong presence in both quarrying and mining, Nepean stocks many common sizes of Major Wire’s Flex-Mat 3 Tensioned and Modular screen media to quickly meet customer demand. Nepean also offers the rest of Major Wire’s screen media line, which includes OptimumWire® Woven Wire—the strongest woven wire in the industry. As a full service dealer, Nepean will educate its customers through Major Wire’s Screen Maintenance Simplified Seminars as well as conduct on-site Screening Plant Audits that identify problems throughout the entire screening operation and provide recommendations on how to fix them.

New 1-foot x 2-foot Flex-Mat® 3 Modular Panels Unveiled

The best screen media increases productivity…even more. Flex-Mat® 3 High-Performance, Self-Cleaning Screen Media technology, which has been proven in 20,000+ applications worldwide, is now available in 1-foot x 2-foot (305 mm x 610 mm) Modular panels. The vibrating wire technology has proven its value in 1-foot x 1-foot (305 mm x 305 mm) Modular panels since 2007. These new 1-foot x 2-foot Modular panels allow operations currently using traditional 1-foot x 2-foot polyurethane and rubber panels to increase their existing screening capacity and in-spec material throughput up to 50%. Each panel can also replace two 1-foot x 1-foot panels without any screen box changes. When compared to using two 1-foot x 1-foot panels, the new 1-foot x 2-foot panels increase open area by an additional 4.6%.

Made out of OptimumWire®, the industry’s strongest wire, the 1-foot x 2-foot Modular panels provide the durability, ductility, hardness and tensile strength to last longer and minimize labor, maintenance and lost production costs. The Flex-Mat 3 independently vibrating wire technology increases throughput over traditional rigid polyurethane and rubber panels by creating more screening action and eliminating blinding, pegging and clogging.

To meet your needs on virtually any flat-surface screen deck, 1-foot x 2-foot Modular panels are available in snap-, step-, pin- and grooved-types in opening sizes of 30 mesh, or 0.020 inch, up to 1-1/2 inches (30 mesh, or 0.5 mm, to 38 mm).

Flex-Mat 3 is the ideal screening solution in many applications, including aggregate, mining, sand & gravel, aglime, C&D recycle, coal, slag, talc, asphalt, top soil, salt, mulch, industrial minerals and green waste.

Spring Screening Solutions

Two common spring screening challenges faced by producers are wet, sticky material and worn-down equipment. Major Wire’s Flex-Mat® 3 and on-site Screening Plant Audits solve both problems.

Flex-Mat 3

Spring showers often create wet material. Screening this wet material causes severe blinding and clogging, which changes material gradations, reduces production and causes plant shutdowns. Flex-Mat 3 in Tensioned and Modular versions solves this problem! Flex-Mat 3’s independently vibrating wires increase screening capacity and in-spec material throughput by up to 50% and lasts three times longer than traditional screen media.

Screening Plant Audits

Spring startup often means that all of last year’s equipment comes out of hibernation and is expected to perform. Unfortunately, not every piece of equipment is always up for the challenge. A Major Wire Screening Plant Audit will help you find the equipment that’s not quite up-to-par so you can start the season screening right. Equipment failure and material flow problems cause thousands of dollars in lost production. We’ll identify these problem areas and provide a detailed report with recommendations on how to improve your operation’s productivity.

Contact your local Major Wire Authorized Dealer today to learn more about how Flex-Mat 3 can improve your operation and/or to schedule your free on-site Screening Plant Audit.

Producers Praise Flex-Mat® 3

Pit & Quarry and Aggregates & Roadbuilding recently featured stories from producers about the benefits of Flex-Mat® 3. The production results drastically improved for these two North American aggregate operations:

Hinkle Contracting Company – Kentucky, United States

Multiple Hinkle Contracting Company operations were shutting down daily to clean screen media, costing the company thousands in spec-material production. After one Hinkle operation used Flex-Mat 3 Modular to increase spec material production by 25%, another operation installed Flex-Mat 3 Tensioned and doubled its production. Now Hinkle uses Flex-Mat 3 in three fourths of its aggregate facilities.

Read more about how Flex-Mat 3 saved Hinkle Contracting Company thousands in lost production.

Morrissey Aggregates Ltd. – British Columbia, Canada

The owner of Morrissey Aggregates Ltd. found his solution to severe blinding and clogging—Flex-Mat 3 Tensioned—at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2008. The operation produces 100% more spec material on wet days because it can now run without screen media problems, whereas it used to have to shut down completely. The screen media has passed more than 400,000 tones of material so far without needing to be replaced. The operation can sell its product to more companies because it now easily meets specification requirements.

Read more about how Morrissey Aggregates Ltd. increased production and in-spec product in wet weather using Flex-Mat 3 Tensioned screen media.

Major Wire Plant Audits Prove Their Worth

A poorly performing screening operation will result in lost production time, lower quality product and profit. Even minor problems with material flow and the screen box, such as missing channel rubber, uneven crown (bucker) bars and poor selection and installation of screen media can seriously impact final production numbers and material specifications.

Major Wire offers a no-cost, no-obligation professional Screening Plant Audit conducted by Territory Managers and qualified local Authorized Dealer personnel. A Screening Plant Audit will clearly identify and offer specific solutions to major and minor problems with existing screens and include recommendations on how to maximize a plant’s overall screening performance.

Proven Results

Here’s just one example of how screen operations that try to save money often tend to pay more in the long run by sacrificing material quality and production.

Application: 300 tph, Sand & Gravel

Problems Found: Crown bar rubber failure, abnormal side pan wear and fractures, clamp rail wear, broken and pegged woven wire, broken competitive self-cleaning screen media and the use of multiple screen media types and opening sizes on the same deck.

Corrections: Fixed screen box failures noted above, installed proper clamp rails, replaced the pegged woven wire with OptimumWire® Woven Wire (one opening size) and replaced the broken self-cleaning screen media with Flex-Mat® 3 D configuration (one opening size).

End Result: The premature screen breakage has been completely eliminated, the operation is producing “perfect spec material” for the first time in its history, its woven wire screen media is now lasting 25% longer and Flex-Mat 3 has helped increase overall production by 27%.
